Carmen Montón Giménez (born 9 March 1976 in Burjassot, Spain) is a Spanish politician who belongs to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). She was the Spanish Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare from the 7 June 2018 until her resignation on 11 September 2018 due to the scandal of her master’s degree.

Biography and career

Politics in Valencia and Congress of Deputies

Married with one child,[1] Montón studied medicine and became involved in the youth wing of the PSOE.[1] She entered active politics in 1999 when she was elected a councillor for her home town of Burjassot[1] to the immediate north-west of Valencia city. She resigned from the council in 2004 when she was elected to the Congress of Deputies as a deputy for Valencia, being re-elected in 2008.[1] She was regional counselor of Health of the Community of Valencia between 2015 and 2018.

Her activity in Congress in her first year was centred on legislative preparation for laws legalising marriage between two people of the same gender.[1] She has also spoken in favour of efforts to reduce domestic violence, including the creation of a telephone line to help males of a violent disposition,[1] and for new laws to allow pregnant deputies to cast votes from outside the Spanish Congress.[2]

Minister of Health and resignation

She was chosen by Pedro Sánchez, new Spanish Prime Minister, following the motion of censure that the PSOE presented against the previous government of Mariano Rajoy (PP) and that was approved by the Congress of Deputies on 1 June 2018, appointed her as Minister in new Spanish government.[3] Felipe VI sanctioned by royal decree of June her appointment as holder of the portfolio of Minister of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare.[4] On 7 June she took office as Minister before the King at Palace of Zarzuela.[5][6]

In September 2018 the Spanish newspaper eldiario.es uncovered evidence that Montón had obtained a Master's degree from URJC without attending most classes, amid other irregularities. Answering to the journalists' questions, she could not remember in which campus she had attended the classes.[7] During a press conference, Carmen Montón showed her final project's front page, but refused to share the document with the journalists. The following day, Montón announced her resignation as Minister of Health.[8][9] Among other problems, significant sections of her thesis had been copied from other publications, including Wikipedia.
