Carletonville is a gold-mining town in western Gauteng, South Africa. It is one of the richest gold-producing areas in the world. At 3,749 m, Western Deep Levels holds the record as the world's deepest gold mine.

Developed by various mining companies from 1937 onwards, the town which was named after the long-serving mining director of Consolidated Gold Fields, Guy Carleton Jones was not officially incorporated until 1959.

The Elandskraal mine, site of a 3 October 2007 collapse, is located in Carletonville.

Carletonville it forms part of the Merafong City Local Municipality situated in the West Rand district municipality in Gauteng province. it is also the seat of Merafong City Local Municipality

Shopping

  • Carletonville mall is the newly opened shopping destination in the town, having opened its door's in 2015 it has over 85 stores and it is anchored by Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Truworths and many others. It also has a McDonald's and a KFC drive-through located along the station street also known as R500 road. The GLA of this mall is 25,000m2

Economy
