The website's critical consensus reads, "California Typewriter is an affectionate, nostalgic love letter to the typed word from enthusiasts and experts alike."[1] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 80 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[2]
Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote, "a playful piece of Luddite fetishism, in thrall to the fuddy-duddy designer chic of old typewriters, most of them manual. It's sort of like a documentary about people obsessed with custom cars...."[3]
