Busiswa Gqulu (born 27 November 1988), known professionally as Busiswa or Busi is a South African singer-songwriter and poet, born in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, although she has mostly lived in Durban.[1] she gained public recognition in a feature on DJ Zintle Song "My Name Is" After being discovered by Kalawa Jazmee CEO Oskido.

After the successful Collaboration with Dj Zintle she released hits such as "Ngoku", "Lahla" "Gobisiqolo" a feature on Bhizer EP Album.[2] On 19 December 2017 she announced the release of her debut album, Highly Flavored, preceded by single "Midnight Starring" Featuring Dj Maphorisa and Moonchild Sanelly. The album's second single was "Bazonela". Throughout her career Gqulu has received numerous accolades,In 2012 she was named in the Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans.[3]

Early life

Busiswa Gqulu was born on 27 November 1988, in Mthatha,Eastern Cape,[4] When she was young her family moved from Mthatha to Durban due to parents’ work.[5] At 15 Gqulu grew passion of writing poems. she recalls "I’ve been doing poetry since 2004 when I was in Grade 11",[6] she performed her first poem at her grandmother’s funeral.[7] Then in 2005 her poetry journey started when she joined the collective Young Basadzi Women of Poetry.[8][9] Since the She performed poets she wrote at corporate events, small poetry sessions,[10] campus talent shows,[11] festivals and even hosting her own monthly poetry events at the Bat Centre in Durban the" 1st Word Sessions".[12]

Right after high school[13] She performed her poems while trying to find a job,[14] she worked at an art centre where she worked with school children educating them about the arts[15] she said her parents were supportive of her career choice because "there was not enough money to take me to university".[16][17]

Career

2011–2012: Career beginnings

While appearing at live poetry readings performing her poems she met one with one of her friend who introduced her to DJ Bubzin and Sir Bubzin (Known as UHURU group),[18] they invited her while they were making beats in their Studio for the song "Syaphambana" they suggested that she try doing her poems on the tracks.[8] Dj Bubzin,Sir Bubzin and Nqulu were later signed to Kalawaa Record by the label CEO Oskido after he heard the song.[19] The song was later released on the 1st Kalawa Jazmee Dance compilation in 2011.[20] Later that year Gqulu was called by Oskido to record "My Name Is"[21] a feature song by Dj zintle.

The collaboration resulted in a co-writing credit for Gqulu,[22] few months later after recording the song in 2011 she moved to Johannesburg joining Kalawa Jazmee Records[9] The song was a hit and It received extensive airplay in South African radio stations since its release that it was released by a New York record label and Gqulu got gigs in several countries, including Zimbabwe, Angola, and Namibia as a result the song earned Gqulu a nomination at Channel O Africa Music Video Award in the Most Gifted Dance Video,Video of the Year the song lost, the song scoped another nominations at the South African music award for record of the Year.[23]

2013–2016:"Ngoku" and Clash of Chour

"Ngoku" released in 11 March 2013 as non-Album single on iTunes, the song was accompanied by a video released on YouTube.[24] "Ngoku" became a dance hit in Southeast Africa with its catchy chorus,The track got so much airplay and it was commercial successful, Gqulu promoted the single performing it on etv Music show Club808 with Oskido,At the 2014 Channel O Africa Music Video Award the song won the Most Gifted Dance trophy, She later performed the song at the award.[25]

In November 2013 Gqulu released another single "Lahla"[26] featuring Dj Bucks and UHURU was released on iTunes by Kalawa Jazme along with the song video on YouTube which accumulating 1,777,923 views,[26] Gqulu along Dj Bucks performed the song live on SABC1 music show Live Amp,[27] she also performed the song at the 2015 Metro FM Awards.[28][29] In 2016 In September, Gqulu joined the judges' panel for the fourth season of Clash of the Choirs as a Choirs Choirmaster with Kelly Khumalo,[30] Anele Mdoda,[31] JR, Bucie,[32] Sifiso Ncwane and IFANI. She was the choirmaster of the KwaZulu-Natal,[33] Her Team was eliminated after a battle with team Western Cape led by IFANI.[34]

2017–present

In August 2017, Gqulu announced that her debut album will be entitled Highly Flavored, Throughout the remainder of 2017, Gqulu Featured on several singles including Tipcee' "Isichathulo" and Dj Maphorisa "Vuvushka","Midnight Starring".[35][36][37] "Bazoyenza"[38] was released as the lead single for her Debute Anticipated album "Highly Flavored", Gqulu whose known for being fiercely protective of her personal live,On 8 November 2017 shared pictures of her photoshoot which sparked rumors that she was pregnant,[39] She later confirmed on her Twitter account page that she was pregnant. On 8 December,[40] Gqulu released her highly anticipated Debut album "Highly Flavored",The 13-track Album features artists DJ Maphorisa, Busi N, DJ Athie, Da Fre, DJ Toxic, Nokwazi, Moozlie, Lando and Yasirah, The Album is nominated At South African Music Awards for Best Kwaito Album and best female artist.[41] On 8 January 2018, Gqulu gave birth to a son, Lukhanyo Gqulu.

Personal life

Busiswa is longtime pal with moonchild Sanelly who are both from Eastern Cape.[42] Gqulu spent her early years under the care and guidance of her late mother and grandmother,who were a great influence in shaping her strong personality.[43] As a poet performer Gqulu has shared the stage with artist Ntsiki Mazwai, Mak Manaka, Lebo Mashile, Gcina Mhlophe, Ernie Smith and Concord Nkabinde.[1] She was part of the lineup at the Malibongwe Dialogues held in 2008 as part of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations.[44] On 8 November 2017 she revealed on her Instagram account that she was pregnant, She confirming rumors on her Twitter page December,29 Her announcement gained 3,553 twitts,on a metro fm interview she announced that she would take break from music[45][46] On 8 January 2018, Gqulu gave birth to a son, Lakhanya Gqulu.[47][48]

Other ventures

In addition to her music and poetry, Busiswa also works for Art for Humanity (AFH[49]) where she provides workshops for school children,[1] as a means to help develop an appreciation for poetry and the visual arts,[50] Gqulu’s is also working with the Umlazi District Department of Education’s Youth Development Office, tutoring learners on public speaking, debating and performance poetry.[51]
