Burton Franklin Richardson Jr. (born 15 January 1962) is an American martial artist, martial arts instructor, author, filmmaker, and an authority on Jeet Kune Do and Filipino martial arts.[1] Richardson was Black Belt magazine's Self-Defense Instructor for the year 2015. He was also inducted into the magazine's hall of fame.[2]

Early life

Richardson was born in Los Angeles, California to Burton and Avalon Richardson. He is the great-grandson of Irene Franklin and Burton Green.[3] After attending Carson High School, he went to the University of Southern California. Before entering into the world of martial arts, Richardson played college baseball for three seasons along with Randy Johnson and Mark McGwire.[1] While in college, Richardson began to train under Dan Inosanto, Bruce Lee’s training partner, in the art of Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai kickboxing, and Indonesian Silat.

Career

After graduating from college, Richardson continued his training with Inosanto. During his training, he made trips to several countries to learn different forms of Martial Arts. He is one of the few Americans to ever travel to South Africa to study Nguni stick fighting with the Zulu tribe. After studying martial arts for ten years, Richardson started instructing others.

Richardson shared his findings through a monthly column called Burt Offerings in the magazine Inside Kung Fu.[4] The column ran for ten years before Richardson moved on to writing for the European magazine Budo International. Richardson has appeared on covers of magazines like Black Belt, Inside Kung Fu, Inside Martial Arts and Secrets of the Masters.[5] Richardson has published 4 books on martial arts. He is one of the original twelve Dog Brothers with the nickname "Lucky Dog".

In 2007, Richardson directed a movie named One Percent Full starring himself along with Ronnie Ricketts.[6]

Personal life

Richardson married Sarah Badat Richardson in 1998.[7] The couple have a daughter together.
