Brien McMahon High School (BMHS) is a secondary school located in Norwalk, Connecticut, US. It is named after Brien McMahon, a former United States Senator from Norwalk. The school's mascot is a Senator and its colors are red, white, and blue. The school's first senior class graduated in 1962. The current principal is Scott Hurwitz.

The school's marching band, the Marching Senators, is known for its ability in competition. It performs several times each year in prestigious venues such as MetLife Stadium. They have also won several New England Championships, in 2013 and 2015. They currently compete in the USBands competitive circuit. Before 2008 they competed in the Musical Arts Conference.

The Center for Global Studies is a magnet school within Brien McMahon High School. This is a magnet program for students in Fairfield County who want to learn Arabic, Chinese, or Japanese languages, and the respective culture and history. A Middle Eastern Studies program was introduced in fall of 2006.

The diversity break down of the school is 40% Hispanic, 30% White, 23% Black, 5% Asian, and 2% other.[1]

History

Entrance

Constructed in 1957, Brien McMahon High School first enrolled students during the 1958–59 school year. The first graduating class was 1962. In 2006 the school had a major reconstruction.

On September 29, 2010, the school began a garden project to convert its center courtyard into a garden for the entire school to use. Volunteers from Pepperidge Farm, the school's National Honor Society, teachers, and students began the garden, which is used for biology classes, cooking classes, and other classes around the school.[2]

Academics

The school hosts a large Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, currently taught by retired USMC Lieutenant Colonel Robert Killackey and retired Navy Chief David Pascoe. The unit sends a group of cadets every year to Basic Leadership Training, hosted by Bethel's NJROTC unit and taking place at Camp Natural Bridge at West Point Military Academy. Senior Cadets have the opportunity to compete for spots in Leadership Academy, which takes place at Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island .

Athletics

The school's crosstown rival is Norwalk High School; they compete in an annual Thanksgiving Day football game. The boys' lacrosse team was the Division 2 State Champion in 2000 and Division 1 runner-up in 2005. The football team was State Champion in 1994. The girls' lacrosse team was Division 2 State Champion runner-up in 2007. The baseball team was Class LL State Champion runner-up in 2009 and was the FCIAC Central Division Champion in 1998 and 2006. Brien McMahon is a member of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC). The school's athletic director is Joe Madaffari and the athletic trainer is Ashley Oblena who started working at the high school in 2015. BMHS has multiple co-op teams including boys' ice hockey, which is combined with Norwalk High School, the girls ice hockey team combined with Norwalk High School and Wilton High School, and the swimming and diving team, which is combined with Norwalk High School.[3] In their 2016 season the girls volleyball team made it all the way to the FCIAC championship where they lost to Stamford high. The 2017 Girls soccer team has been the first girls' soccer team from Norwalk to qualify for the FCIAC tournament.[4]
