Blasting News is a digital social news platform.

Blasting News is based on the concept of collective intelligence applied to news reporting, usually referred as social journalism, citizen journalism, alternative media or collaborative journalism[2]: it gives the opportunity to professional journalists and non-professional freelancers to report news in a professional setting, ideally fostering a plurality of different points of view.[3] From a methodology standpoint, Blasting News applies a metered form of openness, similar to WikiTribune: everybody can propose a news story, but every piece of news is curated and fact-checked by a team of senior professionals, with a proven journalistic background, before publication (which is not granted automatically).[4]

History

In 2013, Blasting News launched in Switzerland.[5]

Circulation

According to Alexa Ranking,[1] Blasting News went from being the 304° to being the 149° most read website in the world in little more than four years after foundation. The site is currently producing and publishing (on a global scale) 20,000 original video-news articles[6] and 25,000 original news articles each month.[7]

Blasting News gets a significant portion of its readership from social media[8] and it pays some of the contributors accordingly, based on the engaged readers each of their articles receive. This method has generated mixed reactions: some say it is a transparent method that rewards quality through engagement, while others say it results in far-too-low compensation.[9] [10] [11]

Disputes and Editorial Policy

The site was accused of potentially distributing misleading news, given that the platform pays not only professional journalists, but also freelancers and digital influencers (termed "social blasters"). However, the site is ranked as Reliable by commonly used third party fact-checkers[12] and has an Editorial Policy in place[13] aligned with the commitments requested by "The Trust Project - News with Integrity."[14] In May 2018, Blasting News Founder CEO discussed at the Horasis Global Meeting in Cascais (Portugal) how to win the war against fake news.[15] [16]

Awards

In 2016, Blasting News was awarded by Google DNI (Digital News Innovation Fund) a grant of Euro 0.5 million to revolutionize digital information throughout Europe.[17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] Google DNI is a European program part of the Google News Initiative, an effort to help journalism thrive in the digital age.
