Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari (Urdu: بلاول بھٹو‬ زرداری‬‎; born 21 September 1988) is a Pakistani politician and the current Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party since 2007. He is a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since August 2018.

Early life and education

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was born in Karachi on 21 September 1988 to the Bhutto political family.[3] He is of partial Kurdish descent on his maternal side and Iraqi descent on his paternal side.[4]

He spent his early life in Pakistan and Dubai. He left Pakistan with his mother in 1997 and went to London when Bhutto family was in exile.[5]

He completed Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Oxford and received a Master of Arts degree in 2015.[6][7]

Political career

On 30 December 2007, at 19 years of age, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was appointed chairman of the PPP and his father Asif Ali Zardari, announced his son's name change from "Bilawal Zardari" to "Bilawal Bhutto Zardari" to more explicitly reference his familial political connections. Zardari made his official political debut on 27 December 2012 during the fifth anniversary of his mother's death.

In 2016, former president and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari announced he and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would contest the 2018 elections.

As Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman

Zardari led the party to one of its worst results in the 2018 Pakistani general election where he lost two of three seats that he contested and the PPP slumped to 43 seats.[8] One of these seats was historically an extremely safe seat for the PPP, where Zardari finished third, in a result described as 'humiliating' and a rejection of Zardari.[9][10] His PPP party subsequently formed part of the official opposition in the Pakistani Parliament against the PTI government.
