Big Hero 6: The Series is an American superhero comedy[1] animated television series, produced by Disney Television Animation and developed by Kim Possible creators Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley. The series is based on Disney's 2014 film Big Hero 6, which itself is loosely based on the comic book series Big Hero 6 published by Marvel Comics. The series is a sequel as it takes place after the events of the film and uses traditional hand-drawn animation.[2][3] It premiered with a 43-minute episode titled "Baymax Returns" on Disney XD on November 20, 2017. In 2018, the series was moved from Disney XD to Disney Channel before the series premiere. The series formally premiered with two new episodes on Disney Channel on June 9, 2018.[4]

Plot

The series is set after the events of the feature film Big Hero 6 and continues the adventures of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro Hamada and the compassionate, cutting-edge robot Baymax created by his late brother Tadashi. Along with his friends Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Go Go and Fred, they form the superhero team Big Hero 6 and embark on high-tech adventures as they protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains. Hiro also faces academic challenges and social trials as the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT).

The show slightly retcons the ending of the movie. Among the differences are Aunt Cass knowing about Baymax, the Big Hero 6's team identities still being secret from the public, and Hiro attending SFIT as if everything is back to normal (and though a building is erected after Tadashi, Hiro does not receive a grant from the Institute). Hiro also does not come up with the name "Big Hero 6" like it is implied at the end of the movie, instead Fred comes up with the name after having "brainstormed an epic list of team names" and testing them with himself.

Cast

Returning

  • Ryan Potter as Hiro Hamada,[5] a 14-year-old robotics prodigy whose older brother Tadashi Hamada was killed in an explosion at the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology (SFIT) and member of Big Hero 6; he serves as the team's unofficial leader.
  • Scott Adsit as Baymax,[5] an inflatable robot originally built by Tadashi as a medical assistant, but reprogrammed by Hiro to also use martial arts as a member of Big Hero 6; wears a suit of armour with a jetpack and wings. In "Obake Yashiki", Adsit has also voiced Mr. Ohare, the owner of a haunted house attraction called "Mr. Ohare's House of Scares".
  • Jamie Chung as Go Go Tomago,[6] a tough, athletic student at SFIT and member of Big Hero 6 who specializes in electromagnetics; uses two large discs as wheels/skates when in action, and also uses smaller discs as weapons.
  • Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon,[5] a bubbly and optimistic student at SFIT (and Part-Time Student at SFIA or San Fransokyo Institution of Art), chemistry enthusiast, and member of Big Hero 6; she uses chemical 'bombs' that produce a variety of effects.
  • Khary Payton as Wasabi,[5] a smart, slightly neurotic student at SFIT and member of Big Hero 6 who specializes in lasers, and has two laser-like blades on his arms when in action. He appreciates order and control in his life and work environment. Wasabi was voiced by Damon Wayans Jr. in the film.
  • Brooks Wheelan as Fred,[5] a comic book fan and slacker who is also team mascot at SFIT and member of Big Hero 6, using a suit that gives the appearance of a lizard-like monster; he lives in a large mansion. Fred was voiced by T.J. Miller in the film.
  • Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass,[5] Hiro and Tadashi’s aunt and guardian. She is obsessed with cooking new and strange dishes and is oblivious to Hiro's double life.
  • David Shaughnessy as Heathcliff,[5] Fred's family butler, who assisted the team in their training efforts.
  • Alan Tudyk as Alistair Krei,[5] a pioneer entrepreneur and CEO of Krei Tech. He is revealed to know Big Hero 6's secret identities after they saved his life in the film.
  • Paul Briggs as Mr. Yama, a notorious gangster working under Obake and Hiro's arch-nemesis.[7]
  • Stan Lee as Boss Awesome / Frederick Frederickson III,[5] Fred's Dad and a former superhero from back in the 70's. While his real name has never been said, his son is revealed to be Frederick Frederickson IV, hinting at his actual name.[7]
  • Laura Silverman as Krei's assistant, a capable and sarcastic woman who is always at Krei's side. She was a silent character in the movie, but speaks for the first time in the series.
  • Daniel Henney as Tadashi Hamada, Hiro's late older brother who built Baymax and was killed by Professor Callaghan. He appears in a recording in "Baymax Returns"[7], "Failure Mode"[8] and "The Bot Fighter". He also appears in a flashback in "Mini-Max". He appears physically in "Obake Yashiki", but later turns out to be just an illusion created by augmented reality which made Hiro to believe that Tadashi is alive.
  • James Cromwell as Yokai / Professor Robert Callaghan,[4] the former head of SFIT turned criminal. He is currently incarcerated and he has completely repented for what he has done in the film.
  • Charlotte Gulezian as the Ringleader, Yama's right-hand woman.

Introduced in the series

  • Jenifer Lewis as Professor Grace Granville,[5] the stern new head of the robotics program at SFIT who despises procrastination and deep down sees potential in Hiro. She was the former mentor of Bob Aken (now known as Obake) during her first teaching career at SFIT. She is later revealed to know Big Hero 6's secret identities, figured it out by herself.
  • Andrew Scott as Obake / Bob Aken,[5] a mysterious villain who serves as the main antagonist of the first season. Once he was an exceptionally young student at SFIT under Granville before he left the school after a freak accident caused him brain damage, which led him to became an insane, villainous figure, obsessed with destroying San Fransokyo and recreate the city in his image.[9] He sees Hiro as the younger version of himself and ultimately wants him to be his student.
  • Haley Tju as Karmi,[5] a biology student at SFIT who has a rivalry with Hiro, but is in love with his alter ego.
  • John Michael Higgins as Mini-Max, Fred's robot sidekick.[4] Hiro actually built him to make sure Fred does not get into any trouble.[10]
  • Andy Richter as Globby / Dibs,[5] a former loser thief who mutated into a blob-like being after being exposed to an unstable mixture of chemicals from Honey Lemon's chem purse in combination with an experimental neurotransmitter that allows him to alter his molecular structure. He later becomes one of Obake's cohorts.
  • Naoko Mori as Momakase,[4] a professional thief and chef who uses cooking blades as weapons. She later aligns herself with Obake following her defeat by Big Hero 6.
  • Lucas Neff as Noodle Burger Boy, the fast food mascot of Noodle Burger who is was actually an unused military robot built to analyze and counter. He is reprogrammed for evil by Obake.[4]
  • Diedrich Bader as Bluff Dunder,[5] a news reporter for San Fransokyo. Known for his somewhat pompous delivery.
    • Bader also voices Felony Carl, a reoccurring former criminal who possesses a very insightful mind. His nickname was apparently given to him by his mother and he is 42 years old.
  • Susan Sullivan as Mrs. Frederickson,[7][5] Fred's wealthy socialite mother who is embarrassed by her son's antics, but loves him nonetheless.

Development and production

In March 2016, Disney announced that a Big Hero 6 television series was in development and premiered on Disney Channel in 2017. The series takes place immediately after the events of the film and is created by Kim Possible's Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, and executive produced by McCorkle, Schooley and Nick Filippi.[2] The show was reportedly pitched by McCorkle and Schooley shortly following the film's release.[13] Talking to Leonard Maltin for the podcast Maltin on Movies, Scott Adsit suggested an early 2018 release date.[14]

In March 2016, it was revealed that Jamie Chung reprises her role as Go Go[6] and that following November, it was revealed that most of the cast members from the film would reprise their roles, including Ryan Potter, Genesis Rodriguez, Scott Adsit, Alan Tudyk, and Maya Rudolph.[5] Khary Payton replaced Damon Wayans Jr. as Wasabi and Brooks Wheelan replaced T. J. Miller as Fred.[5] On January 6, 2017, Disney Channel released an official teaser trailer for the series.[15]

On March 14, 2017, it was renewed for a second season, ahead of the series premiere.[16]

For the semester finals, Hiro has to turn in a project, but has been preoccupied with fighting Globby who had been trying to steal a piece of Krei tech. While returning the item, Krei reveals that it was a failed piece to an energy amplifier. Inspired, Hiro decides to focus on recreating it only to be turned down by a visibly distraught Granville. He nevertheless continues with it, causing him to ignore his friends. Honey tries to do a project on Shimamoto, so she and Wasabi break into her secret lab and find a wax filter. Fred pitches an idea to Go Go and Krei to capture Globby by presenting a fake amplifier, but he arrives with Noodle Burger Boy. Hiro does not arrive in time as he is completing his project and Baymax is seemingly injured by Noodle Burger Boy, but appears fine. At the open house, Honey plays Shimamoto's message and she reveals herself to be the cause of the "great disaster" in the past. Obake (whose real name is Bob Aken) reveals himself to Granville and has Noodle Burger Boy, Globby and Momakase attack the open house so he can steal Hiro's amplifier. Afterwards, Granville reveals that she knows the Big Hero 6's identities and explains how she knows Obake. Baymax, who was given an Obake chip, kidnaps Hiro and takes him to Obake who reveals his plan to create a star to destroy San Fransokyo so that he can rebuild it and take Hiro on as an apprentice. Globby has a change of heart and frees Hiro and they unite with the rest to stop the impending destruction. Honey and Globby attempt to brace a small town while Wasabi and Go Go evacuate the residents and fight Momakase. Hiro, Fred and Mini-Max then use Kentucky Kaiju to create a powerful wave that disrupts the star and causes Obake's lair to crumble. Obake frees Baymax and sends him to rescue Hiro from drowning while he resigns himself to his fate. Granville decides to pass Hiro for his heroic deeds and he admits that he is unsure if Obake survived. However, the last scene shows Obake's ogre-like symboled chip at the bottom of the bay, which makes it questionable what really happened to him.
