Barış Arduç (Turkish pronunciation: [baˌɾɯʃ aɾˈdutʃ]; born 9 October 1987) is a Swiss-born Albanian actor.

Arduç was born in Scherzinger, Switzerland, and spent his early years there before returning to Turkey with his family. After meeting with the theater actress Ayla Algan, he started professional acting. He initially got supporting roles in the series such as Küçük Hanımefendi (2011), Dinle Sevgili (2011), and Pis Yedili (2011) and continued his career by appearing in Benim İçin Üzülme (2012), Bugünün Saraylısı (2013–14) and Racon: Ailem İçin (2015).

His breakthrough came with the premiere of Kiralık Aşk (2015). Apart from his television career, he is also featured in motion pictures. Arduç is a two-time award winner at the Golden Butterfly TV Awards (2015 and 2016), he had the Sadri Family Theater and Cinema Awards. From May 2016, he is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the Life Without Cancer Society of Turkey. In March 2017, he won the GQ Turkey award for "Mostly Spoken Man of the year 2016".

Early life

Barış Arduç was born on 9 October 1987 in Scherzingen, Switzerland,[1][2][3] as the middle child of real estate agents Gülay and Erol Arduç. Born to a family with Albanian descents, Arduç's paternal family are from Fatsa, while his maternal family originate from Artvin.[2] He has one older brother, Onur Arduç, and one younger brother Mert Arduç. At the age of 8 he permanently moved to Turkey with his family, and went to school at Sakarya and Gölcük. Due to the 1999 İzmit earthquake which affected Gölcük, he was forced to move to Bolu with his family.[4] After finishing his middle school and passing 1st grade of high school, his family moved to Istanbul where he continued his high school education.[5]

After graduating from high school, he won the scholarship of Sports Academy of Kayseri's Erciyes University, but returned to Istanbul when he could not adapt to the school in the first year.[5] Being actively involved in sports such as swimming, diving, football, basketball, handball, he joined the Turkey Underwater Sports Federation and worked as a lifeguard in Şile for 8 years.[1] Later, he met theater actress Ayla Algan and studied acting.[6] He then attended the theatrical training at Sadri Alışık Theater and started professional acting.[7]

Career

2011–14: Benim İçin Üzülme, Bugünün Saraylısı and cinema movies

Arduç first got supporting roles in 2011 in the series Küçük Hanımefendi, Dinle Sevgili, and Pis Yedili. Later in 2012, he portrayed the character of Ahmet Avcıoğlu in ATV's series Benim İçin Üzülme which was written and directed by Mahsun Kırmızıgül and shot in Hopa, Artvin. Arduç's character, a young person who is a sports enthusiast and wants to play soccer in Trabzonspor, only appeared on the first episode and then in the flashbacks in the remaining episodes, but the character was so liked that after his death in the series a 10-meter banner was put on Trabzonspor's tribunes in his memory.[5]

Later in 2013, he joined the cast of Bugünün Saraylısı from its 5th episode, a series based on the work of Refik Halid Karay and directed by Kudret Sabancı. For two seasons, he portrayed the character of businessman Selim Bayraktar, who manages the assets and companies of a young girl named Ayşen Kaya, the sole survivor of a group of companies and played by Cansu Tosun.[8] The first season of Bugünün Saraylısı finished with 31 episodes,[9] and its second season ended after 5 episodes due to low ratings.[10][11]

Barış Arduç had his first cinematic debut in Hakan Yonat's 2014 movie Sadece Sen in which he played the character Emin on the last scene.[8]

On 14 November 2014, the movie Deliha was released in which he played alongside Gupse Özay, Cihan Ercan, and Zeynep Çamcı. It was directed by Hakan Algül, and Arduç played the role of Şirinceli Cemil, a handsome photographer who was after Zeliha.[12][13]

2015–present: Racon: Ailem İçin and Kiralık Aşk

Arduç had his first leading role in 2015 alongside Mehmet Aslantuğ, Hande Doğandemir, and Tomris İncer in ATV's series Racon: Ailem İçin in which he portrayed Tekin Atan, the adopted son and confidant of Mehmet Aslantuğ's character Kenan Korhan.[14] Due to low ratings, the series finished after 4 episodes.[15]

In 2015, Arduç was cast in a leading role opposite Elçin Sangu in Star TV series Kiralık Aşk, which was directed by Metin Balekoğlu, Barış Yöş and Şenol Sönmez and written by Meriç Acemi.[16] Arduç, who portrayed a young and renowned successful shoe designer and business man named Ömer İplikçi, earned a great fan base in the Middle East and won many awards.[17][18] Kiralık Aşk which started airing in the summer months, quickly became one of the most popular series and achieved tremendous success within social media.[19][20] The series's teasers on YouTube have millions of viwes.[18]

Barış Arduç became the advertising face of Derimod company in 2015.[21] The advertisement clip which showed Arduç with 6 different women in a casino, was directed by Ömer Faruk Sorak, prepared by Alametifarika, and produced by Böcek Productions. Nihat Odabaşı took the photograph for the advertisement campaign which was launched under the slogan "Derimod on my feet". The advertising campaign took its place on television, billboards, internet sites and magazines in October 2015.[22]

Philanthropy

In addition to acting, Arduç participates in many social projects and has effort to a variety of charitable organizations. On 19 September 2015, he along many other celebrities sponsored the project "Sportsman Angels" in Istanbul organized by Cancer-free Life Society.[23][24]

In December 2015, Arduç went in front of the camera together with many famous people for a 2016 calendar for the benefit of the Haçiko (Protection of Animals from Despair and Disinterest) Association.[25] Just like other celebrities who appeared with their little pets on the calendar to help alienated animals, Arduç posed with the dog he was taking care of and said "Having an animal is equivalent to having a child. Do not do anything to them that you can not do to your children".[26] All proceeds from this calendar, which was offered for sale at D&R, were donated to cover costs such as treatment, accommodation, and nutrition of animals and create a better standards of living for them.[27]

On Sunday 20 December 2015, TEGV (Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey) organized a charity gala in honor of the charity's 20th anniversary in which many artists appeared and performed for children, including Arduç who performed the song "Nayino". The program, which was broadcast live on Kanal D and lasted about 3 and a half hours, reached the highest number of text messages in support of a charity organization. The audience contributed to the education of 80,000 children with a record number of 123,000 supplements and other donations.[28][29]

On 29 March 2016, Arduç participated in another project by Cancer-free Life Society called the 3rd Traditional "Shopping Lives" ceremony. Many famous alongside Arduç came together for the project and talked and played with children suffering from cancer. All proceeds from this project were donated to the "Social Change Projects", which helped increase the treatment processes and quality of life for children with cancer. Within the scope of the same event, the "Peace Pill" designed by Arduç was also presented at the Şişli Children's Hospital for the purpose of contributing to the oncology section planned to be renovated for children with cancer.[30][31]

On 20 May 2016, at a press conference organized by Cancer-free Life Society in Istanbul, details of the reconstruction project for the oncology section of Şişli Children's Hospital were explained, and Arduç was announced as a "Goodwill Ambassador" for the society.[32][33] A special program was organized on 25 May 2016 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Istanbul, where many celebrities from the world of art, business and society participated. Arduç made the opening speech on this occasion as the society's "Goodwill Ambassador". The money collected at the time was donated to the project of restructuring the children's oncology service at Şişli Children's Hospital.[34][35]
