Chronology
Predecessor BMW 1 Series (E87) (coupé)
BMW 1 Series Coupé (E88) (convertible)

The BMW F22/F23 is the first generation of the BMW 2 Series lineage of compact coupés and convertibles. It was released in 2013 as the successor to the E82/E88 coupe/convertible models of the first generation of the 1 Series lineage. The F22/F23 is produced alongside, and shares many features with- the F20 1 Series range. The body styles of the F22/F23 range are:

  • 2 door coupe (F22 model code)
  • 2 door convertible (F23 model code)

As per the F20 1 Series range, the F22/F23 is powered by turbocharged petrol and diesel engines with three cylinders (petrol only), four cylinders and six cylinders.

The M version of the 2 Series is the M2 coupé. The M2 is powered by a powerful version of the N55 turbocharged straight-six engine. It's successor, the M2 Competition is powered by the S55 straight-six engine also powering the M3 (F80) and the M4.

Development and launch

Interior

The F22/F23 was unveiled in 2014 at the North American International Auto Show,[4][5] followed by 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2014.[6]

The body structure is based on the F20/F21 1 Series.[7] Production began in November 2013[8] and sales began in March 2014.[9]

Early models include the 220i, M235i, and 220d.[10] The 218d and 225d were added in March 2014.[11] 228i, M235i xDrive were added in the end of 2014.[12] On October 13, 2015, the BMW M2 was officially unveiled. As of 2018, the M2 is replaced by the more powerful M2 Competition.[13][14]

The M235i Racing is the track version of the 2 Series developed by the BMW Motorsport division. It is used at the BMW M235i Racing Cup, a BMW-only event within the VLN (Nürburgring Endurance Championship). It is also sold to customer teams in other championships, such as the 24H Series, Touring Car Endurance Series and Pirelli World Challenge.

The 3.0 L N55 straight-six engine develops a maximum output of 245 kW (333 PS). As a track car aimed at amateur drivers, the car features driver aids, such as anti lock brakes, traction control and dynamic stability control.

BMW M2 Coupé (F87)

BMW M2

In October 2015, BMW unveiled the new flagship 2 Series, dubbed the M2. It is an indirect successor to the 1 Series M Coupé. The M2 Coupé began production at the end of 2015, and went on sale in the United Kingdom during April 2016.

With the 6-speed manual gearbox, the M2 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, or 4.3 seconds if equipped with the 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox.[16] The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but the limiter can be raised to 270 km/h (168 mph) as an option.

The US version of the M2 was unveiled in 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.[17]

The M2 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0 litre BMW N55B30 straight-six engine generating a maximum power output of 272 kW (370 PS; 365 hp) at 6,500 rpm and having a redline of 7,000 rpm. Torque is listed at 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) between 1,4005,560 rpm, while an overboost function can increase torque to 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft) between 1,4504,750 rpm. The engine utilises a twin scroll turbocharger.

M2 Competition

BMW M2 Competition

In April 2018, BMW revealed the M2 Competition Coupé as a replacement for the standard M2 Coupé. BMW replaced the N55B30T0 with a twin scroll turbocharger used in the M2 with the S55B30T0 single scroll twin-turbocharged engine with a carbon fibre strut brace as used in the M3 (F80) and the M4. Power and torque figures are increased to 302 kW (411 PS) between 5,2507,000 rpm and 550 N⋅m (406 lb⋅ft) between 2,3505,230 rpm respectively. The car is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the 7-speed M DCT gearbox is available as an option. 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time is improved and is now achieved at 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with the 7-speed M DCT gearbox).

Exterior changes include new 19-inch lightweight Y-spoke alloy wheels, bigger brake discs with grey M-sport brake callipers, M-sport wing mirrors from the F80 M3, new front bumper with gloss black kidney grille for improved cooling, new two-pass exhaust system with electronically controlled flaps for improved emissions, new adaptive headlamps and two new exterior colours namely Sunset Orange Metallic and Hockenheim Silver Metallic respectively. Top speed stands at 250 km/h (155 mph) or 280 km/h (174 mph) with the optional M-driver's package. The interior also receives minor modifications that include a carbon fibre trim, a new steering wheel from the F80 M3 with "M1" and "M2" driving mode selector buttons, door sills with "M2 Competition" badging and M-sport seats with "M2" badging. Weight has also been increased as compared to the standard M2 Coupé and now stands at 1,550 kg (3,417 lb) courtesy of the new engine and cooling system. Deliveries of the M2 Competition began in July 2018.[14]
