Azeem Amrohi (Urdu: عظِیم امروہوی ), (born April 29, 1945) is an Urdu poet and a scholar. He is the leading marsiya writer of the present era and the Urdu media refer to him as asr e hazir ka Meer. Amrohi started writing poetry early in his life and has written almost every form of Urdu poetry, including Hamd, na`at, nazm, ghazal, qasida, salaam and manqabat). As of 2011 he was most famous for his 30 elegiac marsiya.

Early life and education

Azeem Amrohvi was born on April 29, 1945, in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh to a very religious family. He was the first child of father Noor ul hasan and mother Raziya bano. He lost his mother as an infant and was raised by his grandmother. After completing his bachelor's degree in Commerce from Lucknow University, he joined Food Corporation of India, but continued his education while working. After achieving many degree courses in Urdu like Adeeb, kamil, dabeer, fazil he completed his M.A in Urdu and started writing poetry and prose. His book Marsiya Nigaraan e Amroha established his reputation, receiving accolades from critics and readers. He started his Ph.D. when he had already published eight books.

Career

He wrote his first marsiya at 24. This work received a tremendous reception in Pakistan in the early 80's. He received the Meer Taqi Meer award from the former President of India Gyani zail singh in 1993 and wrote a travelogue of his journey to Iran. His works describing his travels in Iran received the book of the year award by the Urdu Academy of Delhi. The Iranian Government published six of his books. He is the only Urdu writer to have written a book on Ruhollah Khomeini in poetry form.
