The Women's 4 × 400 metres relay competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom was held at the Olympic Stadium on 10–11 August.[1]

Summary

In the final, the USA had individual 400m bronze medalist DeeDee Trotter lead off. From the gun she put distance on the rest of the field. While the display clock read 49.57 for her split, it was more like 50.3, handing the baton to Allyson Felix several meters ahead. With the miscalculation Felix ran close to a 48.1 split, reported as 48.85, then Francena McCorory (49.39) and individual gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross (49.07) continued to extend the lead. It was almost 3 and a half seconds at the finish. Russia was clearly second ahead of Jamaica and Ukraine, those teams remaining in the same positions from the first handoff.[2][3]

The three medaling countries finished in identical places in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Sanya Richards (Ross) for the USA and Novlene Williams (Mills) for Jamaica have been on all three teams.

On February 1, 2017, following retesting of doping samples, Antonina Krivoshapka samples tested positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol). As they had been disqualified four years earlier, the Russian team was disqualified.[4] Finally, the bronze medals were reallocated to the Ukrainian team.[5] Another Russian sprinter Yulia Gushchina was found guilty of doping in 2017.[6]
