Archdeacon of London

The Archdeacon of London is a senior ecclesiastical officer in the Church of England. She or he is responsible for one of two archdeaconries (the other is the Archdeacon of Charing Cross) within the Two Cities (London and Westminster) episcopal area of the Diocese of London – that episcopal has no area bishop but is under the direct care of the diocesan Bishop of London.

History

Before the 20th century, the ancient London archdeaconry included parts of the East End as well as the City of London. The extent of the archdeaconry was reduced in 1912 (with the creation of the Archdeaconry of Hampstead) and in 1951 (with the creation of the Archdeaconry of Hackney) before more recent border changes limited the archdeaconry's area to that of the City of London.

Archdeacons of Charing Cross

This archdeaconry, comprising the City of Westminster, was presumably created shortly before Klyberg's appointment in 1989. The archdeacon serves directly under the Bishop of London, who takes direct responsibility for the Two Cities area since there was no area bishop.

2016 reorganisation

On 16 June 2015, it was announced that from 1 January 2016 the Archdeacon of London would take responsibility for the whole Two Cities area, though a part-time Associate Archdeacon would also be appointed to work across both cities.[1] Lain-Priestley was collated to the Charing Cross archdeaconry,[2][3] but has since become known as the "Archdeacon for the Two Cities".[4]
