Animal Equality is an international non-profit animal rights organization whose aim is "to achieve equal consideration and respect for animals, and the abolition of animal slavery". This approach challenges the concept of speciesism, which considers animals as merely property and thereby of lesser value than humans.[1] Currently the organization is present in Spain, UK, India, Italy, Germany, Mexico and Venezuela. Their activities are concentrated in the cities of Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, Caracas, London, Rome and Purne.

Objectives

The objective of Animal Equality is "to raise awareness of the suffering and deaths of nonhuman animals as victims of speciesism and work towards the abolition of animal use through the promotion of veganism."[2]

Animal Equality does not support welfare reforms, or changes in the way animals are exploited, as the group believes that "reforms in animal treatment benefit exploiters by increasing efficiency and profit, and encourage the public to feel more comfortable about consuming animal products."[2]

Activities

Animal Equality organizes street demonstrations to promote respect for animals.[3] They have also carried out several other direct actions amidst some media coverage, such as human chain-link in from a slaughter house,[4] an open rescue of six pigs[5] and an investigation into the slaughter houses in Spain.[6] Members of the organization slipped down the Toro de Osborne building [7] and the bullring in Las Ventas.[8] In June 2008 they carried out two joint operations in the La Monumental bullring in Barcelona: while two activists slipped down from the façade, four more jumped into the ring after one of the bulls died.[9][10] According to the organization, the activists who jumped into the ring were attacked by the public and workers with the bullring. In July 2008 Animal Equality conducted an investigation in which several activists entered a farm belonging to the Campofrío company and recovered sixteen pigs' corpses which had previously been taken to the company's office.[11]

On 21 January 2009, on a program called "Diario de", Telecinco broadcast images of the assault on the Saragossa bullring carried out by Animal Equality and their raid on a warehouse with 40,000 hens, intended to expose the exploitation of these birds.[12]
