Andre Dwayne Russell (born 29 April 1988) is a Jamaican cricketer. Russell plays for the West Indies internationally and for Jamaica in West Indian domestic cricket, as an all-rounder. Widely regarded as the biggest hitter of the cricket ball, Russell has hit a century in 42 balls (3 fours and 11 sixes in Caribbean Premier League vs. Trinbago Knight Riders). He bats predominantly in the middle order for the West Indies.

Domestic career

In the season 2010 he played at Barnards Green Cricket Club in Worcestershire, England, helping them secure promotion from Worcestershire Cricket League into Birmingham League cricket.[1] He took 39 wickets at an average of 10.15. He also led the averages with his batting, hitting 799 runs in 11 innings at an average of 99.88 (3 NOs).

On 21 September 2013, in a match against India A he became the first bowler in T20 to take 4 wickets in 4 successive deliveries taking the wickets of Kedar Jadhav, Yuvraj Singh, Naman Ojha and Yusuf Pathan.

International career

A fast bowling all rounder, Russell made his Test cricket debut against Sri Lanka in November 2010.[2][3]

He made his ODI debut in the 2011 Cricket World Cup match against Ireland at Mohali. He scored only 3, and was bowled by John Mooney, as his side went through a lower-order collapse to be bowled out for 275 from 267/6. However, he impressed with the ball, taking 1/37 from his 10 overs (2 maidens) and had bowled set Ed Joyce (84 off 106), and breaking a 91-run partnership with Gary Wilson to halt the fluent Irish run-chase. That proved to be the turning-point and West Indies won by 44 runs. He also took 2/46 against India in the 2011 Cricket World Cup at Chennai.

After a poor home series against Pakistan, he made his mark against in the ODI series against India. After being dropped from the first two ODIs, he scored 92 not out off 64 balls (8 fours, 5 sixes), coming to the crease at 96/7 in the 3rd ODI at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound. He had a 78-run partnership with keeper Carlton Baugh (36 off 73 balls) and then an unbeaten 51-run partnership with Kemar Roach (7* from 10) to help West Indies reach 225/8. He took 1/59 (the wicket of Harbhajan Singh, 41 off 64 balls), affected the run-out of Subramaniam Badrinath and took a catch at backward point to dismiss Parthiv Patel (46 off 56 balls). Despite his all-round efforts, India won with 22 balls to spare. In the 4th ODI played also at North Sound, he scored 25 from just 14 balls (3 fours, 1 six), and with the ball had figures of 3/16 (from 7 overs, wickets of Subramaniam Badrinath, Ravichandran Ashwin and Praveen Kumar) to dismiss India for 146, as the visitors lost by 103 runs. In the 5th ODI at Sabina Park in Kingston, he became the Man of the Match as he took 4/35 (from 8.3 overs) to dismiss India for 251 in 47.1 overs.

T20 franchise career

Indian Premier League

During the 2012 Indian Premier League Players Auction, he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for a sum of $450,000.[4]

He was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2014 auction for 60 Lakhs INR.

On 10 April 2018, he scored his career best 88 not out in just 36 balls against CSK in a losing cause, where he slammed 11 sixes, thus scoring 75% of his runs in sixes alone.

In 2014 he began a second career as a recording artist under the name 'Dre Russ', with two singles set for release in November, one a collaboration with Beenie Man.[5] He has been a key batsman for scoring quick runs at the death for Kolkata Knight Riders. He has an Ipl strike rate of 180.02. He was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of 2018 Ipl auction.

Pakistan Super League

In the 2016 Pakistan Super League he played for Islamabad United.He was drafted in by United For US$140,000 during initial player draft that took place on 21–22 Dec 2015.His side won the inaugural Edition of PSL He was an important member of the side as he finished the tournament as leading wicket-taker (16)

Other T20 leagues

On August 6, 2016, Russell scored the fastest Caribbean Premier League century, when he completed the milestone in 42 balls. His blitzkrieg contained as many as 11 sixes.[6]

In May 2018, he was named as one of the ten marquee players for the first edition of the Global T20 Canada cricket tournament.[7][8] On 3 June 2018, he was selected to play for the Vancouver Knights in the players' draft for the inaugural edition of the tournament.[9][10]

In September 2018, he was named as the Icon Player for Nangarhar's squad in the first edition of the Afghanistan Premier League tournament.[11]

Controversies

According to the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO), allrounder Andre Russell committed an "anti-doping whereabouts" violation, and could face a lengthy ban from cricket. Russell, being a part of the West Indies squad for the World T20 2016, has reportedly missed three such tests in a 12-month period, which equates to a failed test under doping laws. "We received notification of Russell's violation about two weeks ago and I've appointed a panel to hear his case," JADCO independent disciplinary panel chairman Kent Pantry told Reuters. Athletes must make their whereabouts known to local anti-doping agencies to facilitate testing. Russell could face a possible two-year ban if found guilty of the violation. "There is a process regarding the findings by JADCO," the West Indies Cricket Board said in a statement. "All that will be observed and you will be advised accordingly."[12] On 31 January 2017, Russell was banned from cricket for one year.[13]
