The Amarillo Texas League team is a yet-to-be-named Minor League Baseball team that will begin play as a member of the Texas League in Amarillo, Texas, in 2019. They will be the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.[2] They will play their home games at Amarillo Ballpark, a new $45.5 million stadium in downtown Amarillo.[3] The team's name will be decided in name-the-team contest.[4] Five finalists have been selected: "Boot Scooters," "Bronc Busters," "Jerky," "Long Haulers," and "Sod Poodles."[5] These names have received negative feedback from locals over their absurd nature, but the team has indicated their intention to adopt an unusual, family-friendly name.[6]

History

On June 21, 2017, David G. Elmore, president of Elmore Sports Group, announced the relocation of the San Antonio Missions Double-A franchise to Amarillo in 2019. The Double-A franchise will continue to compete in the Texas League under a new nickname.[7] This move is part of a larger relocation wherein the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Pacific Coast League will relocate to San Antonio in 2019, continuing the use of the Missions nickname at the Triple-A level, and the Helena Brewers of the rookie level Pioneer League will move to Colorado Springs.[8]
