Alvarez case

The Alvarez incest case was uncovered late March 2009 when 59-year-old Arcedio Alvarez was arrested in Mariquita, Colombia, accused of imprisoning and sexually abusing his daughter Alba Nidia Alvarez over a period of 25 years, beginning from when she was 9 years old.[1] The daughter also gave birth to 14 children, 6 of whom died.[2] Alvarez has been named "The monster of Mariquita" by national press.[3]

Perpetrator

Arcedio Alvarez Quintero (born in 1950) was a convicted child molester and sex offender from Mariquita, Colombia. Throughout his years in Mariquita he practiced farming with his family, becoming a farmer himself as an adult.[4]

In 2009, Alvarez Quintero was prosecuted for molesting and abusing his biological daughter for years, resulting in 14 children, 6 of whom died due to malnutrition and lack of proper care. Alvarez Quintero claimed that his crimes were part of “God’s plan”[5] and furthermore denied any biological relationship to the victim, but this was later disproved after confirmation of his biological relationship to the victim.[6] Alvarez Quintero became known as the Monster of Mariquita, and the Colombia Fritzl, after the infamous Austrian murderer, rapist, and child molester, Josef Fritzl.[7]

Crime

After the death of Alvarez Quintero’s wife, he began to abuse his 5-year-old daughter Nidia. The rapes are believed to have started when she was about 7 years old, and continued for roughly 26 years,[8] resulting in 14 pregnancies, the first when Nidia was just 13 years old.[8][9] Of the 14 children to come from this abuse, 6 of them died before the prosecution due to denial of medical care by Alvarez Quintero, and of the 8 surviving children, the oldest was 19 years old at the time, and the youngest was only a few months old.[9] Alvarez Quintero also never let his daughter leave their home during the time of the abuse and would often tell her that their relationship was simply “God’s will”.[10] As the children grew, Alvarez Quintero began to assault his young daughters and may have been grooming his sons to do the same.[7][8]

Victims

Arcedio Alvarez’s victims included his daughter Alba Nidia, 35 at the time of the trial,[11] and her children by him, his grandchildren. Six of their children died due to lack of needed medical attention when Alvarez refused to take them to the hospital.[7] Alba Nidia herself was abused from age 5; although Alvarez reportedly taught her to read and write, he also convinced her that his abuse was acceptable.[7] Alba Nidia grew up poor in a small home in central Colombian[12] Little information exists about her education, but she did mention in one of the reports that her father taught her how to read and write [13] Her mother died when she was young.[9] Her father abused and had sexual relation lying to her and telling her what they were doing was right since she was 5 after her mother died.[7] Alba Nidia was the only daughter of Arcedio Alvarez (Monster of Mariquita).[7] Her children were their father’s grandchildren as well.[9]

Investigation

Arcedio Alvarez was caught and arrested in March 2009 and became a convicted child molester after being charged with the heinous crimes against his daughter, whose sexual abuse and mental scarring had gone on for over 30 years.[14] After Alba came forward in 2009 about what had been happening to her ever since she was young, investigation revealed that most of the town where they lived knew of the suspicious things occurring and never said anything about it.[15] The investigation began when councilwoman Gilma Jimenez, brought to light the horrible conditions Alba and her children were living in with her father and how poor their health was.[16] When this first came to light, Arcedio repeatedly claimed that Alba was only an adopted daughter and that they had agreed to their strange relationship. However, several lab tests proved that Alba Nidia was undoubtedly Arcedio’s daughter.

During the investigation, Alvarez needed police protection when attending his court dates due to the severity of his crimes and the hatred the community felt toward him. Alvarez continued to plead not guilty, claiming that Alba was adopted and that they held no biological connection at all. This case and his crimes led to changes in the Colombian law requiring those who have raped children to go to prison for life. Alvarez was found guilty of all his crimes against his daughter and her children, and was eventually sentenced to a minimum of fifteen years in prison.
