Alexi Tuomarila (born 27 February 1974 in Pori, Finland) is a Finnish jazz pianist and composer.

Biography

Tuomarila received classical piano lessons from the age of 6 until he was 18 years old. He was enthusiastic about rock music, before he discovered jazz in his father's record collection. In 1993 he started music studyies at the Conservatory in Helsinki (1994–99). He continued his studies under Diederik Wissels and Nathalie Loriers at the Conservatory of Brussels. During his studies he met with Nicolas Kummert, Christophe Devisscher, and Teun Verbruggen, who joined in his Quartet from the start in 1999. The same year he won the award for best band and best soloist in the international competition Jazz Hoeilaart. In 2001, he received the first prize in the jazz solo competition in Monaco, and he won the Tremplin competition in Avignon with his quartet. The quartet then had released three albums. In 2005 he formed a trio, with Mats Eilertsen and Olavi Louhivuori, and they released the album Konstellasjoner. Since 2006 he has played with Tomasz Stańko, and in 2009 he joined the quintet Woodoo Alle. He has also collaborated with Joey Baron, Kenny Wheeler, Anders Jormin, Gress Aper, Lionel Beuvens, and Perico Sambeat.[1]
