Edition Records is an independent record label that was founded in 2008 by pianist Dave Stapleton and photographer Tim Dickeson.[1]

Background

In 2008, pianist and composer Dave Stapleton and photographer Tim Dickeson launched Edition Records as a new label for jazz, contemporary composition and improvised music.[1][2] As of August 2017, the catalogue consists of 89 recordings.[3] In 2013 the label launched Edition Classics to focus on new music and chamber music from international ensembles and soloists. The label is distributed in the UK by The_Orchard_(company). The label is known for its "accessible adventurousness"[4] and rigorous quality control.[5] The label is also praised for its ability to spot innovation and potential winners.[6][7] In 2017 Edition Records and the Royal Academy of Music announced that the 2017 winner of the seventh Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize was saxophonist and composer Tom Barford. The label released albums by previous winners including Josh Arcoleo and Rob Luft.[8]

Festivals featuring Edition Records

The first Edition Records Festival was held at London's Kings Place in September 2011 and was a notable success. Sebastian Scotney in London Jazz News wrote "Marius Neset's fiery quartet on the final gig of its UK tour giving a sell-out audience the ride of its life. Anton Eger in particular was playing as if his life depended on every touch of a cymbal. Inspiring."[10] Further festivals were held in 2012 and 2013. At the 2013 festival, Edition launched its classical label Edition Classics.[11] The first release on this label was 'Vibrez' by Cellophony, an octet of eight cellists, which received critical acclaim.[12] In February 2017, the Cockpit in London featured the cream of Edition Records artists in a Jazz FM (UK) event organised by Jez Nelson. Performances included Laura Jurd's Dinosaur and a solo performance by Jasper Høiby.[13]
