Alanganallur is a panchayat town in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.[1] It is headquarters for the Alanganallur taluka and revenue block.

Agriculture is carried out in about large area around this place. Paddy, Sugar cane, Coconut and Plantain are the major crops. There is a sugar factory located within 1 km from Alanganallur.

The Jallikattu (A way to find best Bull for Breed) ceremony is conducted here during the Pongal (harvest festival) season, to choose the best breed, which occurs during the middle of January (usually 14 January) and on the first day of Tamil month Thai. Tourists all over from India, even from abroad visit here during this festival to watch Jallikattu.

Alanganallur's climate is moderate with no extremes. This place is well irrigated by Periyar sub canal. People of different religions and castes live here. All people, irrespective of case and religion, agitated for Jallikattu in the year 2017.

Madurai is accessible within 16 km. Alagar kovil is also close by, within 18 km. The Thadakai Amman falls are located near T. Mettupatti village. Kodaikanal, Vaigai dam, Kumbakarai falls and Kutladampatti are some popular tourist spots nearby. There is a small dam ('Sathiyar') near Palamedu.
