Ahmed Shehzad (Urdu: احمد شہزاد , born 23 November 1991) is a Pakistani cricketer.[1] He is a right-handed opening batsman who made his One Day International and T20I debut for Pakistan in April 2009 against Australia.[2]
In June 2018, he failed doping test and was tested positive for using banned substance during domestic match.[3] He was dropped by his domestic team, Habib Bank Limited, ahead of the 2018–19 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.[4] In August 2018, he was not awarded a central contract for the 2018–19 season by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).[5]
Personal life
Shehzad was born on 23 November 1991 in the city of Lahore. He belongs to a Pashtun family and is fluent in Pashto.[6][7] When Shehzad was two years old, his father died and he was raised by a single mother in Anarkali, Lahore.[8]
On 19 September 2015, Shehzad married Sana, his childhood friend. Shehzad was really excited about this event and he hired a personal stylist and designer for his clothes.[9][10]
Domestic career
He was the leading run-scorer in the 2016–17 Departmental One Day Cup, with 653 runs, including a career-best score in List A cricket of 166 in the semi-final. He was also captain of team.[11][12] During the tournament he scored three centuries and three half-centuries in nine matches.[13]
In April 2018, he was named as the captain of Baluchistan's squad for the 2018 Pakistan Cup.[14][15] He scored the most runs for Baluchistan during the tournament, with 251 runs in four matches.[16]
International career
Shehzad made his first-class debut in 2007. The innings which led to a call-up for the national team was a 167 he scored in Pakistan Youth’s victory against England.[17][18]
Shehzad made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2013 scoring 38 in the first innings and 55 in the second.[19] Ahmed Shahzad was part of the Test squad against South Africa in UAE. However he wasn’t selected in the playing XI in either of the 2 Tests against South Africa.
Controversies
Shehzad was issued a one match ban in 2011 for showing dissent in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. This was after he was issued a fine just the month before on disciplinary grounds.[20]
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued Shehzad an official reprimand after his frequent quarrels with Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan about Dilshan's past and current religions.[21]
During a Pakistan Super League group stage match vs Peshawar Zalmi, Shahzad had an exchange of words and physical conflict with fast bowler Wahab Riaz. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) imposed a fine on both players and issued an official warning to them.[22]
After Pakistan's exit from the 2016 World Twenty20 from losing 3 matches against New Zealand, India and Australia, Shehzad's poor performance led to a PCB committee suggesting a ban on him and player Umar Akmal.[23]
