Jun trained under Jellyfish Entertainment alongside South Korean boy group, VIXX for a short period of time then trained for three years with CJ E&M.[1] He appeared on season 4 of I Can See Your Voice in episode 7. Donghun competed on Superstar K5 and I Can See Your Voice episode 4, where he ended up winning the episode and earning high praise from Got7's JB as well as the audience. Wow trained at YG Entertainment from the age of 19 alongside Winner.[1] He later moved to CJ E&M, where he met Jun and Donghun.[1] Kim Byeongkwan participated in Season 1 of K-pop Star but was eliminated during Casting Final round.[1] Kim Byeongkwan also trained under JYP Entertainment alongside Chan.[1] Chan was also part of a dance crew called Alive87 and specialised in popping.

The members also appeared in many YouTube videos for 1 Million Dance Studio.[2] Starting in 2016, the group posted covers and buskings on their YouTube channel, gaining a fair amount of attention, especially from international fans. Their first video was a dance cover busking of BTS' "Dope" and "I Need U".[3]

2017–present: Debut and survival programs

On May 23, 2017, A.C.E released their debut single album Cactus, with a song that provides an EDM sound made by Zoobeater Sound.[4] They made their official debut stage on the music program The Show on the same day.[5] The song focuses on the story of the boys' lives up until their debut. They received some negative attention from South Korean viewers for wearing hot pants in their performances on music shows.[6] On September 8, 2017, A.C.E released an English version of the song, with some alternate lyrics,[7] that they dedicated to their fans.[8]

A.C.E in 2017

On September 18, 2017, it was announced that Jun joined KBS' idol rebooting show The Unit[9] and Chan was later announced to be joining him as well.[10]

A.C.E released their second single album Callin' on October 19, 2017.[11]

In October 2017, Jun and Chan auditioned for the idol rebooting show The Unit where they successfully passed the audition, each receiving 4 mentor boots.

In October 2017, three members (Donghun, Wow, and Kim Byeongkwan) also participated in the television survival show Mix Nine where they passed the audition, receiving praise for their performances and abilities by Yang Hyun-suk.[12] When the show ended, two of the three competing members earned TOP9 in the debut line-up of the male team: Kim Byeongkwan (ranked 4th) and Donghun (ranked 8th), while Wow finished 11th overall. It was later revealed that the male team won the competition, receiving a score of 8,114 and will be making their debut.[13]

On February 10, 2018, Chan took the last spot (ninth overall) to complete the debut group for Unit B in the finale episode of The Unit[14] while Jun was eliminated in the 21st place before final round.[15]

On March 15, 2018 A.C.E released their special single called "5TAR (Incompletion)". This song is a special gift for their fans.[16]

On April 7, 2018, Chan officially debuted in UNB on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook.[17]

On May 2, 2018, it was announced that the debut of the TOP9 from Mix Nine, including Kim Byeongkwan and Donghun, had been cancelled.[18] Following the cancellation news, it was announced that A.C.E, excluding Chan, will comeback with a repackaged album on June 7.[19]
