Abington High School, known as Abington Academy between 2011 and 2015, was a middle school located in Wigston, Leicestershire, England. It officially opened in September 1957 as Abington High School.[1]

History

Predecessor Schools

Late 1800’s : Old British School, The Board School, Mixed School under County Council control.

Evening Continuation School, Long Street. Opened November 1892 to 1914

Responsible Teacher : Mr Edgar S Boulter ( also Evening Institute 1930-1938) nb closed every November for the Wigston Feast.

1. Wigston Magna Long Street Mixed School (age range 6-13) 1911-1921 ( feeder school -Bell Street Infants). Headteacher Mr E A Preston retired in 1913 after 44 years service at the school. New Headteacher- Mr E S Boulter (1/10/1913)


The history of the school is traceable to the 1800’s moving to its last site in 1954 and officially opening in September 1957.[2]

On 1 April 2012, Abington High School converted to an academy, becoming Abington Academy. In 2015, plans for the merger with Bushloe High School were finalised.

Additional Buildings

In 2007, 50 years after opening, Abington got a new Sports Hall.

In 2012, a new centre for children with Autism was opened called EXCEL. Children in EXCEL will remain in EXCEL from Year 6 to Year 13,

Merger

A merger with neighbouring school Bushloe High School was proposed towards the end of 2013. After several consultation periods, it was announced in Spring 2015 that Bushloe would close and would merge into Abington in September 2015 to form Wigston Academy under the new trust, Wigston Academies Trust. In September 2017, the age range of the school changed from 10 - 14 to 11 - 16.

On Tuesday 1 September 2015, Abington Academy merged with Bushloe High School to become Wigston Academy under Wigston Academies Trust.
