ADVFN (LSE: AFN)[1] is a financial market website.[2] It provides online data and services to private investors such as stock quotes, charts, news, FOREX, Futures & Options and stock screeners.[3] The site currently covers in excess of 70 stock exchanges from across the globe. It is known for its active[4] bulletin boards (internet forums).[5][6]

History

ADVFN was established in the last quarter of 1999 and floated on AIM[7] in March 2000. It now has over 2,000,000 registered users.[8]

In September 2006, ADVFN acquired InvestorsHub.com - an online investment community website in the North American market. ADVFN bought AllIPO, an online IPO trading platform, as well as stock brokerages TSCTrade and Throgmorton Street Capital in July 2009. In 2013 ADVFN acquired Finance Manila, a key resource in a rapidly growing market economy.

In recent years, ADVFN has expanded from the UK to Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico and United States with geo- and language-targeted financial sites in these territories.

Data provision

ADVFN provides real-time stocks and shares prices.[9]

In February 2011, ADVFN launched Level 2 Montage[10] - a system combining four Level 2 order books trading simultaneously. It includes the order books of Chi-X Global, Turquoise and PLUS as well as the London Stock Exchange.

In 2016, the site introduced its Follow Feed tool[11] to deliver stocks information tailored to the individual user. The tool allows investors to collect up the stocks that interest them and then see real-time data on: price breakouts, high volume trades, order book activity, news, regulatory announcements, broker ratings and stock chat. Follow Feed is presented in a timeline style using the social media format of news feeds. ADVFN followed up with Brexit Follow Feed,[12] a newsfeed showing the same data as Follow Feed, but specifically for stocks, indices and currency pairs that are identified as Brexit correlated.

ADVFN operates both free and premium bulletin boards, which receive between 10,000-12,000 posts a day.[13][14] The bulletin boards have often been a springboard for shareholder activism.[15]

ADVFN International Financial Awards

The annual ADVFN International Financial Awards launched in March 2015. The awards recognise and celebrate the best of breed products and services from across the financial industry, both nationally and internationally.[16] The latest awards were announced on 14 March 2018[17]. Past winners have included: ActivTrades, Alex Brummer, City Index, CMC Markets, Currencies Direct, ETF Securities, Fisher Investments Europe, Halifax Share Dealing, Hargreaves Lansdown, IG, Interactive Investor Investors Chronicle, Plus500, Saxo Capital Markets, Societe Generale, Steph McGovern, TD Direct Investing, The Economist, The Share Centre and Wellesley.

Events

ADVFN subsidiary InvestorsHub produced MJAC2017 - Investorsuub International Cannabis Conference[18] in September 2017 to cater for the growing retail investor interest in marijuana/cannabis stocks. ADVFN and MJAC (ADVFN's Disruptive Investment Conferences arm) teamed up with CryptoCompare to produce the CryptoCompare & MJAC London Blockchain Summit, which took place in Old Billingsgate, London on 13 June 2018. The event included participants such as Ripple, Coinbase, Coinfloor, Citi, VanEck, Coinshares and BlockEx.
