- 11 June – In a referendum on its status, Puerto Ricans vote in favor of statehood amid a hisotrically low turnout.[1] This figure is attributed to a boycott led by the pro-status quo PPD party.[2]
- 20 September – Hurricane Maria makes landfall over Puerto Rico, causing extensive damage to the power grid and killing at least 499 people. Total losses are estimated at $94.4 billion.[3]
