The 2017 Betway UK Championship was a professional ranking snooker tournament taking place from 28 November to 10 December 2017 at the Barbican Centre in York, England.[1] It was the eleventh ranking event of the 2017/2018 season.

Mark Selby was the defending champion, but he was defeated by Scott Donaldson 3–6 in the last 64.[2]

Ronnie O'Sullivan equalled Steve Davis's record of six UK titles by defeating Shaun Murphy 10–5 in the final.[3] This was O'Sullivan's 31st ranking title and 18th Triple Crown title, equalling Stephen Hendry's record of most major titles.[4]

The "rolling 147 prize" for a maximum break stood at £15,000

Tournament summary

  • A major upset in the first round was 2nd seed, and world number 3, Ding Junhui losing 5–6 to Leo Fernandez, seeded 127, despite having led 5–1 and having a great chance to clinch the match in frame 7. Fernandez had only recently returned to the professional circuit after serving a 15-month ban for a corruption charge.[6]
  • Also in the first round, 1992 UK Champion 55 year-old Jimmy White, who was seeded 118, beat Ali Carter, seeded 11, 6–2.[7]
  • In the second round, the defending champion, world number 1 Mark Selby, was defeated by Scott Donaldson, who was seeded 64. Donaldson, who prior to the tournament had lost all of his 10 matches of the season, trailed by 0–2 before winning 6–3.[8]
  • Only four top 16 seeded players reached the last 16 of the tournament, them being John Higgins (4), Shaun Murphy (5), Mark Allen (6) and Ronnie O'Sullivan (7). This was the lowest number of top 16 seeds to reach that stage in the tournament's 40 year history. Only Shaun Murphy and Ronnie O'Sullivan made it through to the quarter-finals.
  • For the first time since 2004 all quarter-finalists were British. Six of them were from England.
