The 1979 UK Championship (known as the 1979 Coral UK Championship for sponsorship reasons) was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place between 19 November and 1 December 1979 at the Guild Hall in Preston, England.[1]

John Virgo won the event by defeating 1978 world champion Terry Griffiths 14–13 in the final, and the biggest event win of Virgo's career. The previous years' champion, Doug Mountjoy was defeated by Steve Davis in the opening round.
