On May 24, 2016, protests at a Donald Trump rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, turned violent, with rioters and police clashing outside the Convention Center.
For several hours protesters and police clashed in downtown Albuquerque, with rioters burning signs and throwing rocks and bottles, and police responding with smoke devices. There were several injuries and 3 rioters were arrested
Incident
Donald Trump held a rally that attracted over 7,000 supporters in Albuquerque on May 24. The Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), a local radical left wing group, invited anti-Trump protesters from neighboring cities and states to converge on Albuquerque to harass Trump and his supporters gathered for the rally.
While the event began peacefully, it descended into violence later that night. Protesters broke through barricades and charged the convention center, setting afire and throwing at police campaign merchandise stolen from street vendors, smashing the convention center glass doors and windows, and throwing rocks at police and Trump supporters trying to exit the rally.[9][10] The crowd spread through downtown toward Route 66, and continued to clash with police until 11:00.[11] 3 rioters were arrested in the chaos and several people were injured, including police officers and a mounted police horse that fell to the ground in the melee
Reactions
Donald Trump tweeted on the event and surrounding chaos after the unrest. "Great rally in New Mexico, amazing crowd!" he tweeted about his fans. As for the protesters, he tweeted, "The protesters in New Mexico were thugs who were flying the Mexican flag. The rally inside was big and beautiful, but outside, criminals!"[12] Trump's next stop was to be Anaheim, where the police chief Chief Raul Quezada issued a warning to protesters that "there is no room for violence in Anaheim."
