The 1948–49 Iraq FA Championship was the first national football championship held in Iraq. The Iraq Football Association organised the tournament in the same year that they were founded. It was contested by six teams from across the country, split into two groups with the winners of the groups facing off in the final.
The North Group included Al-Kuliya Al-Askariya (Baghdad), Montakhab Kirkuk (Kirkuk) and Al-Tayour Al-Zarqaa (Mosul), while the South Group consisted of Haris Al-Maliki (Baghdad), Sharikat Naft Al-Basra and Al-Minaa (both Basra). Al-Kuliya Al-Askariya and Sharikat Naft Al-Basra won their respective groups, and the final (played at Al-Kashafa Stadium) ended 1–0 to Sharikat Naft Al-Basra, who were coached by Englishman Tommy Thomas and who had two English players in their lineup.[1] It is believed that the Iraq FA Championship continued up until 1956 when the Iraqi Central League was founded, but no records are available for these years.
