Željko Babić (born 19 May 1972) is a retired Croatian handball player and current handball coach.
Career and life
Playing career
He played for Neretva Opuzen, Badel 1862 Zagreb, Razvitak Metković, Italian teams Gammaude and Pallamano Secchia and RK Jelsa. He played from 1982 to 2006.
Coaching career
He was an assistant coach under staff of Slavko Goluža in Croatian national team, with whom he won a bronze medal at the 2012 European Men's Handball Championship, bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, bronze medal at the 2013 World Men's Handball Championship and silver medal at the 2013 Mediterranean Games. On 27 February 2015 he was appointed head coach for the Croatian national team and he coached Croatia at the 2016 European Men's Handball Championship, 2016 Summer Olympics and 2017 World Men's Handball Championship.[1] He also coached RK Metković.
He also coached Meshkov Brest from Belarus, RK Krško and EMC Split.
On 30 January 2017, it was announced that Babić had been sacked as the head coach of the Croatia national team due to a poor run of results and due to Croatia finishing 4th in the World Men's Handball Championship 2017.
Following the 2017–18 season, he was named as head coach of Slovenian club RK Gorenje Velenje. He parted ways with Gorenje in May 2018.
Personal life
He was born in Metković in family of Ante and Nedjeljka Babić. He has brother Ivica, who is a priest and sister.
He is married and has got three children, Greta and Ivan, who are twins, and one more daughter Anđa.
