(1851) Mot inventé par le chimiste américain Charles Upham Shepard à partir du grec ancien παρά, para, « auprès », et columbite, « colombite », à cause de sa ressemblance à cette dernière [1] [2]. Shepard proposera plus tard de la renommer parailménite.
