Du grec ancien Αἰθίοψ, Aithiops composé de αἴθω, aithō (« brulé > noir ») et de ὤψ, ōps (« air, face ») à mettre en parallèle avec la construction de atrox (« atroce, d’air sombre et lugubre »).
