From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (“goose”). Cognate with Thai ห่าน (hàan), Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), Shan ႁၢၼ်ႇ (hàan), Zhuang hanq. Compare Middle Chinese 雁 (MC ŋˠanH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (“goose”), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (“goose”).
