From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (“goose”). Cognate with Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), Shan ႁၢၼ်ႇ (hàan), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Zhuang hanq. Compare Middle Chinese 雁 (MC ŋˠanH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (“goose”), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (“goose”).
