Noun

사이시옷 (saisiot)

  1. The Hangul consonant "" (similar to "s") that is inserted between the two agglutinating words, or more precisely, added to the end of the first word (ending with a vowel in modern Korean), for one reason or another:
    • For serving as a genitive case similar to the English 's,
e.g., 나랏말씀 (naras-malsseum, narat-) "nation's or national language"
    • For more adaptive pronunciation of such words,
e.g., 나뭇 (namus-ip, namut-nip, namunnip) "tree leaf," 돼지 (mes-dwaeji, met-ttwaeji) wild boar, literally, "mountain boar"

Alternative forms

  • 사이시읏 (saisieut)
