First attested in the Yongbi eocheonga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447 as Middle Korean 나라 (nara) (connective form: 나랗 (narah)), from Old Korean *narak according to Beckwith 2007[1] (compare Hambuk dialect 나랑 (narang)).
