Syllable

(don)

  1. A Hangul syllabic block made up of , , and .

Etymology 2

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean (ton). Various hypotheses exist regarding the etymology beyond Middle Korean. Possibly a pre-Middle Chinese borrowing, from (OC *d͡zen, "money"). This word has also been connected with 돌— (dol-, “to turn, to circulate”) and (dol, “stone”). One of hypotheses explains 돈 as the present indicative connective form of 돌— (dol-, “to turn, to circulate”). (Literally, "the one which is tuned around")
