Etymology

Literally "cutting lizard's tail", 蜥蜴 (トカゲ) (tokage, lizard) + (no, possessive particle) + 尻尾 (しっぽ) (shippo, tail) +  () (kiri, cut). In the alternative pronunciation, きり becomes ぎり due to rendaku (連濁).
