昌吉

Chinese

prosperous; flourish lucky; Jilin Province (abbrev.)
simp. and trad.
(昌吉)

Etymology

Borrowed from Manchu ᠴᠠᠩᡤᡳ (canggi), from Mongolian ᠴᠠᠩᠭᠢ (čangɣi), from Written Oirat ᡔᠠᡊᡎᡅ (canggi).

Also possibly the same city as the one named 彰八里 (Zhāngbālǐ) in the History of Yuan [14th c. CE], and جَنْبَلِقْ (janbaliq) in Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk [11th c. CE]. The second component of that name was evidently related to Old Turkic 𐰉𐰞𐰶 (balïq, town, city).
