Etymology

From  (しん) (せん) (shinsen, new compilation/selection) +  (まん) (よう) (しゅう) (Man'yōshū, oldest anthology of poems compiled in c. 759 CE).

Proper noun

新撰万葉集 (shinjitai kanji, kyūjitai kanji 新撰萬葉集, hiragana しんせんまんようしゅう, rōmaji Shinsen Man'yōshū, historical hiragana しんせんまんえふしふ)

  1. a 私撰和歌集 (shisen wakashū, privately compiled anthology of poems) in two volumes, thought to be compiled by Sugawara no Michizane around 893–913 CE, with the poems written in 万葉仮名 (man'yōgana)
