Etymology 1

Pan (2015) proposes that it is a contraction of 女兒女儿, comparing it to (1ho; 1hoe), where 1hoe is a contraction of 蝦兒虾儿, and noting that some Wu dialects pronounce (3nyy) with a (MC mˠa)-final (/o/).

Pronunciation

Note: 1'noe - diminutive (e.g. 囡囡).

Definitions

  1. (Wu) child
  2. (Wu, dated in Shanghai) daughter
