修験道 (hiragana しゅげんどう, rōmaji shugendō)

  1. A highly syncretic Buddhist religion or sect and mystical-spiritual tradition which originated in pre-Feudal Japan, in which enlightenment is equated with attaining oneness with the kami (神). Practitioners are called yamabushi (mountain hermit).
