ローマ字

Japanese

Kanji in this term

Grade: 1
on’yomi

Etymology

ローマ (Rome, Roman) + (character).

Note that it is not ×ローマン字 (rōmanji) – ローマ is from Portuguese, not English; this is an easy mistake for English speakers to make. Compare however ローマン体, which does use ‘n’, because that word is borrowed from English.

Pronunciation

Noun

ローマ字 (hiragana and katakana ローマじ, rōmaji rōmaji)

  1. Latin alphabet
  2. romaji (Japanese written in the standard 26-character latin script).
