Etymology
Borrowed from Portuguese sabão[1][2][3], or from Spanish jabón, earlier xabon.[2][4][5] The initial sh- in the Japanese term suggests that Spanish might be the more likely source, considering historical pronunciation patterns. Cognate to Okinawan サフン (safun).
