Borrowed from from Sanskrit कन्या (kanyā, girl, virgin, daughter), Pali kaññā (young girl), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (new, fresh), whence also कनीन (kanī́na, young, youthful). Cognates include Latin re-cēns (recent; fresh; young) and Ancient Greek καινός (kainós, new).
