From Old Georgian ალაგი (alagi, road, way), according to Ačaṙean borrowed from Old Armenian աղագ (ałag, road way). The Armenian word itself has no secure etymology.

Cognate with Mingrelian ოლაგე (olage). Compare Laz ალაგა (alaga), ალარგა (alarga).
