From Proto-Tai *ŋinᴬ (to hear). Cognate with Lao ຍິນ (nyin), Tai Dam ꪉꪲꪙ, Shan ငိၼ်း (ngín), ယိၼ်း (yín) or ၺိၼ်း (nyín), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜃𑜫 (ngin), Zhuang nyi or ri. Compare also Proto-Austronesian *deŋeR (whence Paiwan ladenga or langeda, Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig).
