From Sanskrit छत्र (chatra, “parasol”); perhaps via Angkorian Old Khmer chatra, chattra° (“canopy; parasol; sunshade”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឆត្រ (chɑt); Lao ສັດ (sat). Compare Pali chatta.
