Etymology 1

From Old Khmer *cārika (to inscribe by engraving), an extended form of cār (to inscribe (with a stylus), to engrave; to draw a straight line; to plant in rows), from which Thai จาร (jaan) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ចារឹក (caarɨk), Lao ຈາຣຶກ (chā rưk).
